Get out to work out

We are on the verge of summer which means fewer excuses for not being active outside. Someone you know will do their best to give you reasons not to exercise outdoors. Here are a few of the most common excuses, and what you can respond with:

“I don’t have time”: what could be simpler than turning off the TV and walking out the door? Whether you live in the heart of the city or in the suburbs, you can still go outside. Chances are, there is at least a park nearby, if not a ravine or waterfront.

“I have the kids”: So bring the kids with you! There isn’t a kid on the planet who doesn’t enjoy the outdoors once they are there. Sure they want to play video games, or watch TV, but once they are outside, they will forget those. You could try a rewards system where every 10 active minutes outside equals one minute of screen time inside.

“I am out of shape”: Since that is part of the reason you may need to get outdoors, being out of shape is not a reason, it is your motivation. Since you have the distraction of the scenery, you will probably find that you rack up more exercise time outdoors than you can indoors.

“I don’t know what to do”: There are tons of resources available at little or no cost to help you make safe and effective choices about exercising outdoors. From the library to the internet, there is no shortage. The most basic thing you can do is go for a brisk walk, beyond that, you just get more benefits.

“I am too old”: No one it too old to get outside. Whether you are mobile, or restricted to a wheelchair, if you can move inside, you can move outside. Start with 10 minutes and build up from there.

“I hate exercising”: So don’t call it exercise. Go for a walk on your own, or with a friend. Walk to a park and read a book on a bench. Whatever you do, get outside and move.

“I don’t have enough energy to work out”: If you get outside and don’t overdo it, you will have more energy afterwards than before. Most people just need to get started and when they do, their bodies produce the energy they need to exercise.

“It’s raining”: Did you know the air outside is actually healthier when it rains? Aside from that, unless you are made of cotton candy, being out in the rain won’t harm you. If you sweat, rain won’t make you any wetter.

While working out at the gym is a great option, getting outdoors to exercise can be at least as rewarding, not to mention less expensive. Remember to wear the appropriate gear including sunscreen, and then enjoy the great outdoors. Your body will thank you for it.
