You are a farmer (of your life)
While you may not be a farmer in the traditional sense of the word, you are a farmer in so far as your “crop” is you. Much like the traditional farmer who has to know what crop to grow, clear the land, prepare the land, plant the seeds, harvest the crop, and prepare the land for the next season, you have to do many of the same things:
Your crop is your goal: Just as a farmer can envision a field full or wheat or corn, you have a vision for what you want. It may be better sports performance, to lose fat, to feel better, etc.
Clear the field: Like any good farmer, you have to clear the field of large stones, weeds, or anything else that will impede either the growth of the crop or the cultivating of the crop. In your case, you need to get rid of junk food (rocks), spend less time with people who might sabotage your efforts (weeds), and streamline your life to support working towards your goal.
Prepare the land: After clearing the land, you have to prepare it by tilling and fertilizing, and in your case, eating the right foods and staying hydrated to ensure you body is well suited for exercise. Without the right food, you may be hirting your chances at achieving your goal.
Plan the seeding: As a farmer, you have to know not only what you are going to plant, but where, when, how far apart, etc. Likewise, you have to know when and where you are going to work out, and what you are going to do when you get there.
Work the land: This is when the farmer hasn’t seen the crop coming up, but has to watch out for weeds and pests. Same goes for your training. Avoid the temptations and keep the faith, early on you won’t see a lot of results, but with the right dedication you will.
Harvest the crop: The crop has come in and has to be harvested. Whether it is reaching the end of your preparation for a marathon, or going on vacation with a hot body, the results are in. You may not end up with what you wanted but you have the results you deserve. If you didn’t get all your workouts in, or cheated too much with your diet, the results won’t be ideal. However, whatever results you got serve to educate you as you prepare for the next goal.
Prepare the land for the next season: Every farmer has a bad season, and usually more than one. Sometimes there is too much rain, and sometimes not enough. For you, you may not get what you want from your workouts or maybe even become injured. Either way, a better determinant of your character is how you deal with adversity and not success, so know how you will react if you fall short of your goal and what you will do differently in your next training phase.
Like a farmer, if you want to reach your goal, you probably need to do things you aren’t fond of, including getting up early and doing the hard work even when the weather isn’t cooperating. Remember that the people who reach their goals are typically willing to do what others are not. Do the work and enjoy the harvest!
